Word Weavers: Tier II Language Programming Made Simple

A simple, scripted language program you can hand to a teacher or educational assistant — and they can implement it with little assistance from you.

Your time is valuable and needed for Tier II students. Comprehensive, scripted language programming can be the answer for the students who need it most.

What is Word Weavers?

Word Weavers provides foundational language instruction for children ages three through seven who are at risk of language impairment that can lead to difficulties with reading comprehension.

Developed by a retired speech-language pathologist with over 40 years' experience in the field, the program comes with 52 different lessons in five major language areas:

Each lesson gives the student 10 attempts to meet criteria, for a possible 520 lessons.

Simple enough for any educational assistant to deliver

Instructions for each lesson are clear and simple. Data collection and reporting sheets are provided — each set comes with 10 data collection sheets per lesson (520 sheets), so the materials can be used with 10 students.

Every lesson is fully scripted on its own instruction-and-data sheet — what to say, what to do, and exactly what to record. Here is a real sample from each of the five language areas. Click any sheet to open it full size.

These activities can be done by educational assistants, pre-K and kindergarten teachers, and parents, while you monitor progress with ease through the data collection.

Users are welcome to duplicate the instruction and data collection sheets for use with additional students.

Everything you need is included

Toys, picture cards and materials included in the Word Weavers kit

All the materials needed to do each lesson — toys, picture cards, and story books — are included. Picture cards are coated with thick plastic so they will last, and the stories and pictures are culturally relevant and beautiful.

Built so every child can succeed

The Word Weavers kit — five binders, toys, picture cards and stories

Lessons start at the most basic non-verbal level so all children can experience success, then gradually increase in difficulty. If a child reaches a ceiling in one section, they simply move on to the beginning lesson in the next section.

The kit comes in a heavy canvas bag and contains a box of toys and five binders, with each lesson in its own plastic sleeve.

Why story retell matters for reading

Word Weavers builds the listening skills — vocabulary, comprehension, concept development, categorization, grammar and expressive language — that bring a child to the all-important "story retell." We know that kindergarten students who can retell a three-sentence story (with no picture support) are far more likely to read with comprehension by grade three. In fact, students who can retell a story are more likely to find success throughout their academic career and graduate on time. Word Weavers gives young students these skills in an organized way, no matter their starting level.

The program gives you the data to see which Tier II students will need further intervention and which will succeed with a short-term boost.

Born from a desire to reach every student

After more than forty years as a speech-language pathologist, I witnessed far too many children advancing from grade to grade without the language skills necessary for reading comprehension. Large caseloads made it impossible to provide meaningful Tier II intervention to every student who needed it. It was heartbreaking to know how to help, yet be unable to equip dedicated teachers and educational assistants with the right tools. In retirement, I finally had the time to create Word Weavers — a simple, structured program that any teacher or educational assistant can use to support students and see measurable progress. — Cheryl Turner, SLP (ret.)
